February 22
This is the first day of lent. It is the day we have our foreheads marked with ashes in the shape of a cross. Ashes are a bibilical symbol of mourning, penance, and death and remind us of our mortality.
The evening service will lead us into somber reflection through scripture readings, musical selections, a dramatic monologue, Holy Communion and three stations of the Remembrance Ritual:
At Station 1, we will place our written sins into a bag to be hung on the cross. These sins, known only to God, will be burned on Good Friday.
At Station 2, ashes will be marked on our foreheads.
At Station 3, we will receive a nail placed in our palm.
